Stage 13 Thursday 2 Oct: Arras to Hamelincourt (14km/8.7m)

Technically today was scheduled as a rest day but we decided to take some distance off the longer days coming up by walking a short day today, then treating ourselves to a steak lunch at a local restaurant. Lynn and I then further treated ourselves to a girls’ only coffee and cake.

The guidebook describes the landscape over coming days once out if the Arras urban areas as flat and advised that “fields now come in three sizes: vast, vaster and vastest.”

We started at Hamelincourt and walked back to Arras (ie backwards) for logistical purposes… (related to car parking!!! 🤨 no, I’m not over that grievance yet!)

There were a number of cemeteries again today…
Sunken Road cemetery was being tidied up by two workers from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. All of the cemeteries we’ve seen have been very well maintained, irrespective of size or location.
Each cemetery has a Cemetery Register, providing information about those interred there
