Stage 15 Sunday 5 Oct: Peronne to Trefcon (18km/11m)

Another shorter day today and with better weather than yesterday, at least until the wind picked up towards then end. We spent a lot of time on forest trails today, interspersed with fields and small towns… none with much sign of life, even on a Sunday. The only people we saw out and about was a large group of hunters.

Hans & Lynn visited the Historial de la Grande Guerre this afternoon, the largest WWI museum in Europe that is housed in the Péronne Castle. They shared the following:

The mine-clearing crews of the Somme collect each year over 100,000 pounds of shells and live ammunition. It is estimated that a further 700 years will be needed to clear the Somme of bombs.

Some impressive houses in Cartigny
And an interesting factory building
A bread vending machine… €2.20 for two baguettes
Yesterday’s rain left some muddy tracks … but after our Spanish mud masterclass earlier this year they were no problem!
