Tuesday 20 October Barcelona

A “foundation” day today as we had a coffee with Beth then packed her off on a train to the airport this morning. We then headed to the Barcelona Sants train station, navigating around even more major infrastructure works, to purchase our Tarjeta Dorada cards (over 60s discount card on train tickets), did a load of washing then found a fabulous local bar for tea, full of locals watching the UEFA soccer.

Delicious looking focaccias at the early morning coffee stop with Beth
The massive metal dragon sculpture (Drac d’Andrés Nagel) next to Barcelona Sants station
Fabulous patisserie just up the street
Pallets de pinyons, a local Catalan sweet confection are small, dense treats are made from a marzipan-like base which is shaped into balls, completely coated in pine nuts, brushed with egg wash, and lightly baked until golden brown.

The Tradition: Panellets are the culinary highlight of La Castanyada, a popular festival celebrated around All Saints’ Day (November 1st) in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and Andorra. They are traditionally enjoyed alongside roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and sweet wine. (Thanks again Google)

Pork loin, salad and chips for tea… with vermouth (a rediscovered favourite!)
