Monday 26 October Valencia to Alicante

A travel day today… about 2.5hrs between Valencia and Alicante. Our hotel is over the road from the station so not far to drag our suitcases! After getting into our room early we headed off to do some washing, then out again for a bite to eat and sort out how to use the tram system for the rest of our stay.

Today’s transfer
Some interesting “cookies” we’d walked past a number of times
Setting up for markets in market square. Daniel (paella chef) told us that markets had been held in this square for centuries, long before the Central Market building was raised.
Carousel at Valencia station
Oranges for miles…
… interspersed with olives or almonds?

Fun facts:

  • Olive Groves (Olivares): The Valencian Community is home to a rich history of olive cultivation, producing unique local varieties like Villalonga, Blanqueta, and Serrana de Espadán.
  • Almond Orchards (Almendros): Valencia is the third-largest producer of almonds in Spain. Massive stretches of almond plantations cover the transition plains leading toward the mountains.
Alicante station… more like a big tin shed
Viewed from our room… not much better
Our Lady of Grace Parish, (Parròquia de la Mare de Déu de Gràcia): We popped out to visit this church while our washing cycled through, but it was all locked up. This big baby caught our attention as we approached and Google advises s/he is a giant Baby Pelón doll created by the Fundacion Juegaterapia, a Spanish charity that supports children undergoing cancer treatment. Small versions are available for purchase as a fund raiser.

Onto lunch at a local Liaopastel (Spanish chain) cafe…

Quirky table supported by an old motorbike
Beautiful wooden slabs seating
My chimichurri steak salad
His chicken salad
Monument in Plaza de los Luceros, located above our closest tram stop
A building with an eye catching metallic facade
The impressive Palacio Provincial de la Diputacion de Alicante, the headquarters of the Provincial Council of Alicante.
